The Weekend Edit No. 7: Oops, I Dyed It Again
Plus, a thrilling movie to watch this weekend and a hopeful sign I saw in our neighbor's front yard
The Weekend Edit is our little sendoff as we head into the weekend, with a few updates and recommendations from the week, and is free for all subscribers. Happy Friday!
Dearest reader,
Happy Saturday! How was your week? For us, we’re doing a little celebratory dance for two reasons: It finally felt like fall this week, with temps not getting into the 90’s even once, and also because we’re staying at Holiday House again this weekend!
But first, we went to a local United Way gala last night with my brother and his wife, and were invited by our sweet friend Blair whom we just adore. The kids had a sleepover at PJ’s mom’s house, which meant we had the entire night to ourselves. We got all dressed up in tuxes since it was Casablanca-themed and it was such a fun evening with good food, drinks, and company, all to support a great cause.
My mom came over before we left and we all shared some wine and Prosecco while the best playlist serenaded us in the background. It felt like the perfect start to the weekend. You can click here to see more photos from last night, if you want.
In other news, after previously discussing on this newsletter about my hair turning getting grayer and grayer as I get older, I finally decided to just dye it. I received a lot of very sweet messages from readers saying they actually like the gray and to keep it, and I definitely think when I get to a certain age (40?) I will appreciate it, too, but right now I just don’t want gray hair at 33.
Further reading:
I actually dyed it this past summer, but it wasn’t very noticeable because it was only a tad lighter than my natural shade, so it didn’t look out of the ordinary (I bet you didn’t even realize I did it!). I really liked how it turned out then and wanted to recreate that same look, so I made a trip to Sally’s to pick up some hair dye, telling the person helping me that I wanted to match my current hair color exactly. Well…
It didn’t quite turn out that way.
The box said to leave it in my hair for 30-40 minutes, but I only left it in for about 10 after PJ said it was starting to look really dark and that I should probably wash it out. So I did, and sure enough, it was soooo much darker than I wanted. This same exact thing happened in May of 2023 when I dyed my hair in an attempt to cover up my grays right before we left for a brand trip. I was mortified by how it came out but it was too late to change it:
If you’ve seen this photo before, could you tell how much darker my hair was compared to what it normally is?
My hair has been washed three times since I dyed it last night in an attempt to lighten it, and it’s helped a bit, but this is what we’re currently working with:
After a few days of living with it, it’s definitely growing on me, but I’m still hoping it fades a lot more. Oh well. You live and you learn!
Lastly, this put a smile on my face today:
I’m really big into cars (did you know that?), and the new Volvo XC90 was just unveiled. It’s so gorgeous.
The new movie Goodrich, directed by Nancy Meyers’ daughter, looks good.
I’m feeling hopeful by the look of the recent polls.
I made this beef stroganoff recipe for dinner last night and everyone went back for seconds.
I am obsessed with this plaid shirt from J.Crew (it’s on sale!).
We received this planner in the mail from a PR package and I am obsessed. I’ve been using it for two weeks and it’s really helped me stay organized.
The 100 best TV show episodes of all time.
Our daughter’s bedroom makeover.
Every one of these slow cooker recipes looks delicious.

The Watchers on MAX
If you’re looking for a fun thriller to start the season with, we watched The Watchers last weekend while staying at Holiday House and it was just the right amount of spooky and fun. Is it a great movie? Not by any means. But did it keep us entertained the entire time? Absolutely. But what it is it about?
The Watchers is a psychological thriller about a 28-year-old artist (Dakota Fanning) who becomes stranded in a remote forest and discovers she’s being watched by mysterious, sinister figures. As the tension escalates, she must confront the terrifying reality of who, or what, is stalking her.
You can stream The Watchers on Max.
The letters you may have missed this month
sweet delightful photos and the hair I would think grow older gracefully it's better short .... it is a personal decision but you guys are handsome anyway
You are 10 years younger than me! Lol I feel so old. 😉
I thought the gray looked fine but I also don’t care for my gray hair so I get it!
Love the United Way gala pics. You guys are so handsome. I’m glad you had a wonderful date night supporting such a great cause.
Definitely interested in seeing the Watchers. Love those type of movies. I’m always surprised at the end.
Volvo is one of my fave brands. Growing up it seemed like all the loving, stable families in a movie drove one. So I always wanted one when I grew up.
Definitely think some people go into marriage caring more about the wedding than the marriage and that dooms them from the start. We got married in Vegas and we have some hilarious memories for life. ❤️
