Dear reader,

How was your weekend? I’m telling myself it had to have been better than anything that happened last week. After three weeks of not being able to stay at the farm due to a busted pipe, we were able to head out to Holiday House this past weekend for a little rest and relaxation; an escape from the outside world where the only sounds we heard were the baaaa-ing of the sheep and occasional donkey neigh-ing. It was peaceful and just what we needed to recharge.

There is a sort of unspoken theme of our issues on Okay McKay this year as we celebrate 10 years of marriage, and 15 years of being together, and I think that’s nostalgia. What I mean by that is, taking a look back at where we started and how far we’ve come, and everything we’ve learned in between. When you’ve been together for a long time and you start looking back on years past, I think you realize things about your relationship without even trying to. Lessons you’ve learned, communication tactics, love languages, changing goals and outlooks on life.

When I look back on our life together, it feels at once like everything just started yesterday and like it’s been 50 years. Maybe that’s what love does—it bends time until every season feels both brand new and deeply familiar. And it made me wonder: is forever really a length of time, or just the feeling of finding your person?

Baby Foot Exfoliation Peel
PJ loves these for his feet, which take a few days of wearing them to see results, but once you do, they make your feet extremely soft and smooth. It’s become part of his little nightly ritual the last couple days and he loves them. Cozy!

MARRIAGE & RELATIONSHIPS

How I Knew He Was the One

5 (surprising) reasons I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with my husband

We’re celebrating 10 years of marriage next month, and 15 years of being together this year. When you’re with someone for that long, everything becomes second nature with them. Their presence is as familiar to you as breathing. Their scent, their mannerisms, the way they do their hair or the faces they make when they’re adjusting it in the mirror. Because it’s a part of what they do, by nature, it becomes part of your life. I can’t imagine a world where PJ doesn’t pace back and forth with his arms behind his back, one hand wrapped around the other’s wrist, while we tour a house (a clear indication that the gears in his head are spinning at lightning speed as he figures out how he would renovate it).

He is, without a doubt, the love of my life. The only boyfriend I’ve ever had became my husband, who then became the father of my children. My best friend. The one I spend every morning waking up beside, every day working next to, and every evening saying good night to. Life just wouldn’t be the same without PJ by my side.

But how did I know he was the one? People go back and forth on if such a thing even exists in the first place. In a world of 8 billion people, it sounds silly to think of there only be one person for you. And that may be the case, but I truly believe PJ is the absolute one for me. He knows my thoughts before I do and he understands my jokes when no one else does. He inspires me to work harder than I normally ever would, and he is a very good person to raise three kids with, in my humble opinion. PJ & Thomas and Thomas & PJ. It’s just the way it is.

Still, there are things that stood out in the beginning and throughout our time being together that made me realize he was the one I wanted to share not just a king-sized bed with, but also my thoughts and dreams and parenthood and clothes and a last name with, too.

Here are my reasons, and some might surprise you:
