The Weekend Edit No. 38
Celebrating 2 years of Okay McKay, a new gay tv show we're excited to watch, and enter our big giveaway!
Happy Saturday, friends.
How was your week? We spent a few days in Highlands, NC for the first time ever this week and completely fell in love with the small-town charm and the fall vibes there. It’s at a higher elevation than where we live in Tennessee, so the weather was chilly and crisp, and the fall foliage was out of this world. It felt like we were living inside Stars Hollow! I can’t wait to go back.
Our kids are on fall break, and next week is our 10 year anniversary, so it felt like the perfect excuse to get out of town for a few days. We partnered with Old Edwards Inn, and they put us in the most beautiful little cottage on the lake. Everything was perfect and cozy and exactly what you would want from a little fall getaway. I’m working on a post for the blog recapping our trip as we speak!

In other news, we’re celebrating 2 years of our newsletter! Okay McKay felt like a big, exciting leap when we started it back in 2023, and the goal of it has never changed: to connect with you on a deeper, more personal level. To celebrate our 2nd birthday, we’re offering 30% off a year’s subscription! If you have been wanting to upgrade to a paid subscriber but have been waiting for the right time, now is the time! It’s only $35 for the entire year, and that gets you access to every issue we’ve ever posted, including what our favorite toys are and how we explore each other’s kinks (we pull back all the curtains behind the paywall).
We’d love to have you!
We’re also giving away TWO $200 Amazon gift cards to two of our paid subscribers, as a thank you for supporting our small business. If you would like to enter, simply leave a comment on this post and two winners will be randomly chosen next week. Thank you for being here with us. We love you.
ICYMI: Below is this week’s vlog, where we welcome some new chickens to Ocoee Farm from our best friend Matt, cheer on our friend Nick as he finishes the Chattanooga Ironman, and finally cheer on our son as he runs in his cross country meet. Hope you enjoy!
This happens pretty much every Weekend Edit—this newsletter is too long for email, so you may want to click through to Substack see the whole thing.
Boots (Netflix)
Boots is a dramedy about a closeted gay teenager in 1990 who impulsively joins the U.S. Marine Corps with his best friend. The series follows his journey through boot camp, where he must hide his sexuality while enduring the physical and mental challenges of training. It is inspired by the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White and explores themes of friendship, self-discovery, and courage in the face of a homophobic era when being gay in the military was illegal. I’ve been looking forward to this series for a while, and I’m excited it’s finally out!
Normal is Aspirational
If you’re looking for an inspiring weekend read, Bobbi Brown’s memoir Still Bobbi is a refreshing peek into how the beauty icon built her billion-dollar brand while staying true to herself. Grace Atwood from Scratch Pad by The Stripe calls it part business masterclass, part pep talk, filled with lessons on trusting your instincts, putting family first, and embracing your “you-ness.” In her article, Grace shares the life lessons she learned from listening to the audiobook, and I found them all so fascinating.
The Commune (Podcast)
I’m eager to listen to this podcast for my next true-crime fix. The Commune, a 12-part documentary podcast from Stuff in New Zealand, tells the story of Centrepoint, a so-called “free-love” commune founded in the 1970s that promised liberation and community—but hid something far darker. Through archival audio and intimate interviews, the series unpacks how idealism turned to exploitation and how abuse was allowed to thrive behind the commune’s carefully constructed image. It’s gripping, unsettling, and one of those stories that stays with you long after it ends.
Our favorite foot peel is currently 20% off and only $20 right now, making it a weekend must-have. One of PJ’s favorite activities come Friday night is to put these babies on his feet, settle into the couch with a big bowl of popcorn, and watch a new movie. Over the last few weeks, they’ve drastically changed his feet and made them so much softer.
Garlic Butter Pasta alla Vodka with Melty Burrata
Has anything ever sounded more comforting and more perfect for this time of year? Half Baked Harvest always has the most delicious recipes, and I find myself craving a warm and rich pasta as we head into the weekend.

Spend one hour this weekend outside—phone away, heart open. Whether it’s a slow walk through fallen leaves or coffee on the porch, let yourself really feel the season in all its glory.
Here’s to weekends that smell like cinnamon, sound like laughter, and feel like exhaling after a long week. See you Sunday night for Vino and Vent—bring your blanket and your best story from the week. ☕️

Hey you two goat herders —
You have to watch this interview with Miles Heizer (the lead from Boots) — I think you’ll really enjoy how thoughtful and grounded he is talking about the role and the timing of the story…

Also — loved this weekend’s post. That place in NC looked incredible — like a full-on fall fantasy 🍂🍁⛰️ Cozy cottage, crisp air, Stars Hollow vibes… yes please.
And happy 2 years of Okay McKay! 🥂
Your voice, your honesty, your biblical-sized herd of goats (maybe a few less in the future?) — all of it is such a gift. Congrats. (Thank you for being such joys in life!)
Oh — and don’t miss this Bobbi Brown interview with Kara Swisher (below). Totally different energy from Boots, but seriously sharp, grounded, and no fluff.

(And while you’re at it… look up Kara’s interview with Pete Buttigieg. Brilliant.)
Hope you’re both soaking in the season… and all the good things. 🍃
a big hug from California...
Daniel
