It was election night.
PJ and I stayed up to watch it all unfold on TV, hoping for results before we went to bed, but they never came. The race was too close to call.
We stayed up as long as we could but eventually got too tired, so we called it a night and went to sleep.
In the middle of the night, I woke up with a sick, sinking feeling in my stomach. I rolled over and grabbed my phone, checked the results, and let out an audible gasp. I couldn’t believe it.
He beat her. Trump had won.
How did this happen? I thought for sure it would go the other way, that Americans would choose decency, acceptance, and hope, instead of fear, anger, and bullying. I was heartbroken.
This was 2016.
And now, I couldn’t believe it was happening all over again eight years later, like no time had even passed.
