The Weekend Edit No. 15
The podcast we were mentioned on, PJ's new shacket is on sale, and a photo of my haircut
Dear reader,
Happy Friday! How was your week? The kids were out of school Monday for MLK Jr. Day, and again on Tuesday and Wednesday for below freezing temps. It was so cold it hurt to be outside for more than five minutes unless you were completely covered from head to toe, so I get it, but January already feels 240 days long, and the kids have been out of school for 235 of those days, so when they went back yesterday, which allowed us to get some work done, I did a little happy dance.
Here’s what else went on this week:
We finally celebrated our daughter’s 7th birthday! I say finally because we were supposed to celebrate it the week before, but canceled her party because of snow. We had a small party at our house in town that somehow turned into a much bigger one and had a few of her little friends over, along with family and friends of our own. It was a lovely and hectic afternoon celebrating our sassy, beautiful baby.
After about four months of not getting one, I got my haircut yesterday and I immediately regretted it. It’s SO short and wasn’t supposed to turn out like this. I blame myself for not being more detailed with what I wanted at the barber shop. I plan on wearing a toboggan for the next few weeks until it’s grown out more. Plus, I’m just absolutely freezing now that I have so much less hair.
With the kids being out of school for five days in a row, we spent the week holed up at Holiday House, which was so fun and cozy. Mornings are my favorite out there because the light comes in through the five big windows and completely illuminates the entire front room. On the last morning, PJ made homemade pancakes that were delicious and it felt like the perfect way to end our stay.

Speaking of food, we had a few yummy dinners this week. This past weekend we went to our friends’ new cottage down the road from our farm where Matt made us chicken marsala that was to die for. And then a few days later, at our house, we had a taco night with colorful veggies and the best grilled chicken. The secret? This chipotle adobo sauce. Try it. You’ll love it.
Adeline is officially with us full-time now after having previously only lived at the farm for the last two and a half years. I must admit, it’s strange having such a big dog be inside with us all the time, since we’re used to only having our tiny dogs inside, but we absolutely love it. She sleeps next to our bed every night and has yet to poop or pee in the house, something all of our other animals can’t say. Reader, she is so friggin adorable. We are falling in love with having a puppy-like dog again. Also, she’s so smart! PJ has already taught her to sit and shake. She’s partially blind, which we think makes her scared of everything and have high anxiety, but she’s such a joy.
Have a cozy weekend, friends!
Welcome Distractions
Watch “Conclave” on Peacock
The drama! The scandal! The camp! This film is pure entertainment. It follows Cardinal Lawrence directly after the Pope’s unexpected death as cardinals from around the globe gather during the conclave to choose a new Pope. As it continues, Lawrence is learning the secrets of many of the candidates and realizes they all have something to hide. It’s a beautiful movie and the score is mesmerizing. Being Catholic myself (but no longer practicing), I thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle of it.
Read The Borowitz Report
Since
has been doing some form of his satirical news site for more than 20 years, I’m sure you’re familiar with him by now, but just in case you’re not, here’s your introduction. Every day, right here on Substack, he pokes fun at current events, politics, and culture with biting wit and absurd exaggeration. His headlines often resemble real news but quickly veer off into comedic territory, highlighting the ridiculousness of modern-day situations. Think of it as a clever blend of satire and social commentary, perfect for anyone who enjoys sharp, laugh-out-loud takes on the state of the world.Listen to Couples Therapy Podcast
We hadn’t heard this podcast before a subscriber sent it our way. And the reason they did? We’re mentioned in it. I’m a big Matt Rogers fan, and my favorite podcast ever is Las Culturistas that he co-hosts with Bowen Yang, so we were extremely surprised when were sent this episode of Couples Therapy and heard Matt Rogers talk about us! The whole episode is great, but if you want to hear the mention, you can go to the 50:51 mark. A sweet surprise!
What We Wore
PJ got this shirt jacket (shacket, if you will) from Target recently and I think it looks so cute on him. It’s a great fit, and the weight is really nice. I just saw it’s 20% off right now (making it only $24) and it comes in maroon, navy, and dark grey, too. Doesn’t it look so comfy casual with his jeans and yellow shoes?
A Closer Look
Mel Robbins shared the 6 things she does every morning to start her day off right and they just make sense. I was pleased to realize I do several of these already, but I absolutely do not get up when the alarm goes off. I am a chronic snoozer through and through, but I want to get better about it, really I do. Check out her whole routine and see if you already do some of them, too!

This Week’s Vlog
Join us for our first official snow day at the farm!
Have a wonderful weekend! We’ll see you on Tuesday. If you feel up to it, please like this post and share it! It helps get the word out and lets others discover Okay McKay. Thank you, friends!
Just a few unrelated things: that chicken marsala looks absolutely delicious. I don’t think I’ve had chicken marsala in a long time, but if I did, that’s the chicken marsala I would want. Also, I have to admit I’ve never heard of Matt Rogers and have no idea who he is, but I listened to that part of the podcast, and I can imagine how cool it must’ve felt to hear yourself talked about in such a positive way. And I’m happy to be able to say I am much improved as far as my health goes. I’m not back to 100%, but I was able to make it down to the laundry room in my building and wash some clothes, which is a pretty big step. And I’m working to put back on some of the weight I lost while I was sick, and so far I’ve added about 6 pounds; now I just need to work on the remaining 30 or so pounds to get back to a healthier weight. (I didn’t lose 30 pounds, but I was about as thin as I needed to be when I got sick, so I want to get to a bit above where I was before just to feel I have some wiggle room as far as weight goes.)
I’m saying this with lots of respect and love… Thomas, stop, you look SO HOT! It’s ok if you don’t love your haircut, it’ll grow again, but I think it looks amazing.
Happy weekend!
